Your site is unique. We need to work together to achieve a result that reflects your brand and your aims. I’ll give you a fair quote for your work, but it’s important for us to define the parameters. We’ll discuss those parameters, your budget, and different options for your design so that you can get the result you want.

Here are some questions to help you define your needs and want you want from your website. Not every question is relevant to every site, but thinking about your needs in a structured way should give you a clear vision.

Branding, Image and Design

  • Describe your business in less than 150 words. (i.e. your “elevator pitch”)
  • Choose five adjectives that describe (or should describe) what you do.
  • What’s the purpose of the website? (e.g. to sell products, make money from advertising, provide corporate information, develop a fan community, increase your public profile)
  • Choose five websites that you like. (what’s their URL, what do you like in particular, what might you improve?)
  • Choose five websites that you don’t like. (what’s their URL, why don’t you like them, do they have any redeeming features?)

Business Purpose, Audience and Profile

  • How will the site help your business?
  • Who is the target audience? (describe your “average visitor” as best you can)
  • Who is the secondary audience? (who else might be likely to visit the site; press, job seekers, potential business partners?)
  • Why will people visit your site? (how will they find it – online and offline methods, why will they take the time to visit, why will they come back?)
  • What are your goals for the site in terms of popularity and virality? (how big is the target market, what is “success” in terms of rough visitor numbers?)

Site Functionality

  • What websites do you think of as your competition? (what’s their URL, what “key terms” describe what they do/sell?)
  • What features must the site include?
  • What features should the site include? (think about an order of priority)
  • What do you not want on the site? (e.g. a splash page, excessive Flash animation, a specific color)
  • Anything else that might be relevant?
