It doesn't use the tables as the basis of the entire template layout, it just uses some tables in places where they aren't needed. More importantly, it's an application and it's been made by developers and not designers. Certainly I don't have the ability to develop functionality on that kind of level, it's a brilliant application. I'd be asking a lot if I also expected the same guys to be hugely skilled designers, great at website code optimization, visual flair and perfect CSS based design. They've put together a great application, and they've made some templates that work OK. Sure, it took some time to remove all the unnecessary code from the PHP pages to get a raw structure, but I don't think there was anything really terrible in the way they put things together, I just wanted to create genuine flexibility of front end design.
